Q&A with Willie Mitchell

As Memphis celebrates 50 Years of Soul, it’s business as usual at Royal Studio on Willie Mitchell Boulevard, located in Soulsville down the street from Stax Museum. “Papa” Willie Mitchell, a legendary trumpeter, arranger, and producer, is best known for his long-time collaboration with Al Green. Mitchell continues to work and mentor the next generation of Memphis musicians. He welcomed RSVP editor Amanda Dent and photographer Don Perry into the landmark studio that has become a pilgrimage of sorts for musicians and music fans worldwide. With his contagious laugh, quick wit, and playful personality, the 79-year-old Mitchell proved why his son Archie has christened him with another well-deserved title —World’s Oldest Teenager.
